Equal Sweetener

The sweetening ingredient in Equal® Sweetener is aspartame, which is composed of two amino acids (the building blocks of protein).

In the body, aspartame breaks down into the amino acids aspartic acid and phenylalanine, as well as a small amount of methanol--components found naturally in foods like meats, milk, fruits and vegetables.

The body recognizes and uses these components in exactly the same way, whether they come from aspartame or common foods.

Leading health authorities including the American Medical Association, the American Dietetic Association and the American Diabetes Association have also recognized aspartame's safety. In fact, it is one of the most tested food ingredients in FDA history and is currently used in over 6,000 products.

Other ingredients are added to provide bulking and to make it easier to use.

Equal Sugar Lite

In addition to aspartame, Equal Sugar Lite also contains acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), a no-calorie sweetener used in Europe since 1983, and in the U.S. since 1988, with no known documented adverse health effects. Ace-K has also been studied extensively and is found in thousands of products worldwide.
